Find the Right Saddle for Your Riding Style

Every TW Saddlery model features our patented 3-D Adjustable Fit System and the same commitment to premium craftsmanship. The differences between models come down to rider feel, saddle design, intended use, and personal preference.

Whether you’re choosing between two lightweight trail saddles or deciding which Wade best fits your riding style, this guide highlights the key differences so you can confidently choose the model that’s right for you.

Trail Light vs. Featherweight Trail

The Trail Light and Featherweight Trail share the same lightweight western tree design and patented adjustable fitting system, but the biggest difference is the seat design.

The Trail Light features an interchangeable, removable, and shimmable seat system that allows riders to customize seat padding, twist, and overall rider feel. Many riders love the Trail Light because the seat can be adjusted for additional cushioning and personalized comfort during long rides.

The Featherweight Trail features a permanently stitched-in seat with soft padding under the seat bones and a more traditional western feel. It also includes a classic Cheyenne Roll cantle that many trail riders appreciate for security and comfort.

Both models offer:

  • Lightweight construction
  • Patented adjustable fitting system
  • Broad weight distribution
  • Long-hour rider comfort
  • Shoulder freedom and spinal clearance

The choice often comes down to whether you prefer a fully interchangeable seat system or a traditional permanently stitched western seat.

Feature Trail Light Featherweight Trail
Weight Approx. 17 lbs Approx. 18 lbs
Seat Interchangeable, removable & shimmable seat Permanently stitched-in padded seat

Rear Cinch Dees No No

Both saddles are lightweight, highly adjustable, and designed for long-hour comfort. Riders who want maximum seat adjustability often prefer the Trail Light, while riders wanting a more traditional fixed-seat feel often prefer the Featherweight Trail.

Texas Wade vs. Classic Wade

The Classic Wade Saddle features the traditional A-fork Wade pommel and classic vaquero-inspired styling many riders appreciate for its close-contact feel with optional bucking rolls.

The Texas Wade Saddle combines the shorter skirt and functional post horn of a traditional Wade saddle with a more classic western-style pommel that offers additional upper leg support and rider security. Many riders find the Texas Wade provides additional security, giving it a feel similar to a Classic Wade equipped with optional bucking rolls.

Both are built as adjustable Wade saddles using TW Saddlery’s patented fitting system and can be customized to suit the rider’s preferences.

Both models offer:

  • Lightweight construction
  • Patented adjustable fitting system
  • Broad weight distribution
  • Long-hour rider comfort
  • Shoulder freedom and spinal clearance

The choice often comes down to rider preference in pommel shape, feel, and appearance.

Feature Texas Wade Classic Wade

Seat Traditional padded western seat Traditional padded western seat
Purpose Trail, ranch & everyday western riding Traditional Wade riding & ranch work

Rear Cinch Dees Yes Yes
Best For Riders wanting added upper leg support and western styling Riders wanting the classic A-fork Wade style

The Texas Wade features a more traditional western-style pommel with a fuller western appearance and additional upper leg support. The Classic Wade features a traditional A-fork Wade pommel that creates the iconic Wade profile and a narrower, close-contact feel through the front of the saddle. Both provide the same patented fit technology—the choice comes down to rider preference in pommel shape, security, feel, and appearance.

Classic Western vs. Ranch Versatility

The Classic Western Saddle is built on TW Saddlery’s standard lightweight tree, making it an excellent choice for riders looking for a versatile western saddle for trail riding, pleasure riding, and everyday use.

It features our equitation horn, which offers plenty of functionality for mounting, ponying another horse, dragging logs, and completing light ranch chores. Its lower profile also makes it easier to duck beneath low-hanging branches and provides additional clearance during an unexpected dismount.

The Ranch Versatility Saddle is built on a reinforced tree with additional fiberglass and features a reinforced roping horn designed to withstand the demands of ranch work, working cattle, and roping. While heavier than the Classic Western, it provides the additional strength riders need for more demanding western disciplines.

Both saddles feature TW Saddlery’s patented adjustable fitting system and offer exceptional comfort for both horse and rider. The primary differences come down to tree construction, horn design, weight, and intended use.

Both models offer:

  • Patented adjustable fitting system
  • Broad weight distribution
  • Long-hour rider comfort
  • Shoulder freedom and spinal clearance
  • Premium Grade 1 English bridle leather construction

The choice comes down to how you plan to use your saddle. Riders wanting a lighter all-around western saddle typically choose the Classic Western, while riders who rope or spend time working cattle often prefer the added strength of the Ranch Versatility.

Feature Classic Western Ranch Versatility
Weight Approx. 23-25 lbs Approx. 25-27 lbs
Seat Traditional padded western seat Traditional padded western seat
Purpose Trail riding, pleasure & everyday western riding Ranch work, ranch versatility & roping
Horn Equitation horn Reinforced roping horn
Rigging Western Drop Dee Western Drop Dee
Rear Cinch Dees Yes Yes
Best For Riders wanting a lightweight all-around western saddle Riders needing a saddle built for ranch work and roping

The Classic Western is built on our standard lightweight tree, making it the lighter of the two models while still offering the durability needed for everyday western riding. Its equitation horn can be used for mounting, ponying another horse, dragging logs, and general ranch tasks, but it is not designed for roping steers.

The Ranch Versatility features a heavier fiberglass-reinforced tree and reinforced roping horn built to handle the additional stresses of ranch work and roping. Both provide the same patented fit technology and exceptional rider comfort—the choice comes down to whether you prioritize lighter weight for everyday riding or the added strength required for working cattle and roping.

Western Dressage vs. Western Dressage Light

The Western Dressage Saddle features a permanently stitched-in traditional western seat that provides a classic feel and balanced riding position. Designed specifically for western dressage, it combines traditional western styling with the close communication riders appreciate in the arena while remaining comfortable for trail riding.

The Western Dressage Light Saddle shares the same balanced riding position and patented adjustable fitting system but features a permanently mounted shimmable seat. This allows riders to customize seat padding and rider feel according to their preferences. It also includes a classic Cheyenne Roll cantle, giving the saddle a sleek, timeless western appearance.

Both saddles are designed for western dressage but are equally at home on the trail. Each features TW Saddlery’s equitation horn, rear cinch dee rings, and patented adjustable fitting system. Both models can also be ordered with either traditional western rigging or English rigging to suit the rider’s discipline and preferences.

Both models offer:

  • Patented adjustable fitting system
  • Broad weight distribution
  • Long-hour rider comfort
  • Shoulder freedom and spinal clearance
  • Western or English rigging options
  • Rear cinch dee rings

The choice often comes down to whether you prefer the traditional feel of a permanently stitched-in seat or the ability to fine-tune rider comfort with a shimmable seat.

The Western Dressage Light features a permanently mounted shimmable seat that allows riders to fine-tune seat padding and rider comfort without changing the saddle’s traditional western appearance.

The addition of the Cheyenne Roll cantle gives the Western Dressage Light its distinctive sleek profile. Both saddles excel in the western dressage arena while offering the comfort and versatility riders appreciate for long days on the trail.
