Why Riders Choose the Trail Light Saddle
The Trail Light is built for riders who want a true western saddle feel without the weight and bulk of a traditional western saddle. At just 17 lbs, it’s easy to handle on the ground and noticeably lighter on your horse’s back over long miles.
The short, rounded butterfly-style skirt improves contact and allows for greater freedom of movement, especially through the shoulder. Combined with the padded seat, it offers comfort and stability for extended rides without excess bulk.
The interchangeable seat also allows for fine-tuning rider comfort. For riders who are more sensitive to seat feel, the ability to adjust padding makes it easier to dial in the right level of support and balance without being locked into a single feel.
Trail Riding Features Designed for Comfort and Function
The Trail Light was designed specifically for riders who spend serious time in the saddle and want a lightweight western saddle with practical trail riding features, customizable comfort, and reduced bulk.
The 2.5″ equitation horn provides riders with a functional horn for holding onto, ponying another horse, or securing saddle bags, while remaining short enough to stay out of the rider’s way on steep terrain or low branches. The shorter horn profile also helps reduce the chance of injury compared to taller traditional horns in the event of a fall.
The Trail Light features a secure 5″ cantle along with an interchangeable padded seat system designed for long-mile comfort. Unlike a fixed seat, the Trail Light allows riders to fine-tune cushioning, twist, rise, and overall seat feel through adjustable shimming beneath the seat. Riders can choose between suede, smooth leather, or buffalo seat options depending on their preferred level of grip and cushioning.
The butterfly skirt cutout and open spinal channel help ensure the saddle does not interfere with the horse’s spine while improving freedom of movement through the shoulder and loin area. Combined with the saddle’s balanced rigging design, pressure is distributed more evenly from front to back, eliminating the need for a rear cinch in most riding situations.
Additional trail-focused features include:
- 8 standard dee rings for tying gear and saddle bags
- Drop rigging to reduce bulk beneath the rider’s leg
- Premium English bridle leather for a soft, broken-in feel from day one
- Lightweight close contact design for improved rider connection
Riders can also customize saddle color, seat color, conchos, and dee rings to create a one-of-a-kind saddle tailored to their riding style and preferences.
Adjustable Fit for Changing Horses
One of the biggest advantages of the Trail Light is its ability to adapt as your horse changes over time.
Each saddle includes fitting cushions and a full shim kit, allowing you to fine-tune balance and fit across the horse’s back. This becomes especially important as horses naturally change with:
- Seasonal weight gain and loss
- Muscle development or time off
- Natural asymmetry from movement, age, or past use
No horse is perfectly symmetrical, and many saddles don’t account for that. The Trail Light allows you to adjust each side independently, so you can accommodate differences from one shoulder to the other instead of forcing the horse into a fixed shape.
Unlike traditional adjustable saddles that rely on a gullet system to only go wider or narrower, the Trail Light gives you the ability to fine-tune fit where it’s actually needed. This helps keep the saddle balanced and your horse moving comfortably over time.
Traditional Western Feel in a Lightweight Build
Traditional western saddles can be heavy, bulky, and restrictive—especially over long rides.
The Trail Light maintains a true western riding position and feel in a significantly lighter, more streamlined build. Its reduced bulk and closer contact design allow riders to feel more connected to their horse while still having the security of a western saddle.
This makes it easier to:
- Saddle and unsaddle
- Reduce horse and rider fatigue
- Maintain better communication and connection with your horse
It’s a practical option for riders who want the confidence of a western saddle without unnecessary weight or bulk.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Trail Light saddle weigh?
The Trail Light starts at approximately 17 lbs, making it one of the lighter western saddles available.
Can the Trail Light be adjusted to fit my horse?
Yes. The Trail Light features TW Saddlery’s patented adjustable fitting system, including fitting cushions and a full shim/insert kit that allow you to fine-tune fit and balance as your horse changes shape over time.
Unlike traditional adjustable saddles that only change gullet width, the Trail Light can be adjusted independently on each side to better accommodate asymmetry, shoulder differences, and topline changes.
Is this saddle good for long trail rides?
Yes. The Trail Light was specifically designed for riders who spend long hours in the saddle and want the comfort and security of a western saddle without unnecessary weight or bulk.
Starting at approximately 17 lbs, the Trail Light helps reduce strain on both horse and rider over long miles while maintaining a close contact feel and balanced western riding position. The interchangeable padded seat system allows riders to fine-tune cushioning, twist, rise, and overall seat feel for added comfort during extended rides.
Trail-focused features like the butterfly skirt cutout, open spinal channel, balanced rigging design, and 8 standard dee rings make the Trail Light especially well suited for trail riding, camping, mountain riding, endurance riding, and all-day use.
What is the difference between the Trail Light and Featherweight Trail?
Both the Trail Light and Featherweight Trail use the same patented adjustable fitting system, so from the horse’s standpoint they offer the same fit, balance, and adjustability. The biggest difference comes down to seat design and rider feel.
The Trail Light features an interchangeable padded seat system with padding that extends through the mid-thigh, giving riders a softer feel and the ability to fine-tune comfort. The adjustable shimming beneath the seat also allows riders to adjust cushioning, twist, and rise to better customize the feel of the saddle to their individual preference. Many riders who want additional cushioning or a closer-contact feel prefer the Trail Light.
The Featherweight Trail has a permanently stitched-in seat with a more traditional western appearance and includes a Cheyenne roll cantle for riders who prefer a classic western look and added security in the seat. It offers a slightly more streamlined feel while still maintaining the lightweight design and close contact feel both saddles are known for.
Both saddles are lightweight, built for long hours in the saddle, and designed to reduce unnecessary bulk while keeping riders balanced and connected to their horse.
How do I get the best fit for my horse?
For the most precise fit, many riders choose to order our Fit Kit along with their saddle. While your saddle is being built, we’ll send the Fit Kit so you can take measurements and photos of your horse. Once your saddle is ready to ship, we use those measurements to pre-fit the saddle to your horse before it leaves our shop.
After your saddle arrives, we also follow up through our Photo Fit process to help fine-tune balance, shim placement, and overall fit as needed.
