Why Traditional Saddles Often Don’t Fit Arabians
Restricted Shoulder Movement
Arabian horses are known for their athletic movement and exceptional shoulder freedom. A saddle that is too narrow, sits too low in the front, or restricts shoulder rotation can shorten stride length and may contribute to stumbling, bucking, hollowing the back, resistance, or carrying the head unnaturally high in an effort to escape pressure.
TW Saddlery’s patented Adjustable 3-D Fit System allows the width, arch, and shoulder angle to be adjusted independently, helping maintain unrestricted shoulder movement while keeping the saddle balanced.
Saddle Bars That Are Too Long
Many Arabian horses have compact backs, and some have one fewer rib than other breeds. Regardless of rib count, Arabians are well known for having a shorter weight-bearing surface than many stock horse breeds, making overall saddle length especially important.
Many traditional western saddles are built on tree bars measuring 23–25 inches or longer. TW Saddlery tree bars measure approximately 20–22 inches, depending on seat size, making them better suited to many Arabian horses while still providing broad weight distribution and rider support.
Our tree bars also feature generous front and rear flare, allowing the bars to follow the horse’s shape rather than concentrating pressure at the ends of the tree. Combined with our patented 3-D Adjustable Fit System, this provides a balanced fit that is difficult to achieve with a traditional fixed-tree saddle.
Bridging
Bridging occurs when a saddle contacts the horse only at the front and rear of the tree while leaving a gap through the middle. Instead of distributing the rider’s weight evenly, pressure becomes concentrated in smaller areas, increasing the likelihood of soreness and instability.
Because the arch of the TW Saddlery tree is fully adjustable, it can be matched to your horse’s topline for consistent contact from front to back.
Angular Shoulders
Arabians often have more angular shoulders than many stock horse breeds. Traditional saddle trees are built with fixed shoulder angles, which can create pressure points while reducing overall contact between the tree and the horse.
TW Saddlery’s independently adjustable width, arch, and angle allow the saddle to match each horse’s unique shoulder conformation for a more even, comfortable fit.
Dropped Loins & Changing Toplines
Many Arabians naturally have loins that fall away behind the rib cage, while others develop noticeable topline changes throughout conditioning, competition, and aging. Fixed tree saddles often lose contact across the rear of the bars, leaving much of the rider’s weight supported by only the front of the saddle.
The independent rear angle adjustment of the TW Saddlery tree allows the saddle to maintain even contact as your horse’s shape changes over time.
Saddle Rolling
Because many Arabian horses have asymmetrical shoulders or relatively narrow builds, a saddle that is too wide or improperly fitted may shift from side to side during the ride. Saddle roll reduces rider stability while creating uneven pressure across the horse’s back.
A properly adjusted tree helps create balanced contact and significantly reduces unwanted saddle movement.
Excessive Saddle Weight
Arabians are incredibly strong for their size, but many have a lighter skeletal frame than larger western breeds. Every unnecessary pound carried over long trail rides or endurance miles increases the workload placed on the horse.
