Western Performance

Kate Marley Cowboy mounted shooting horse and rider competing in a TW Saddlery saddle

Built for Speed. Designed for Freedom.

Whether you’re running barrels, competing in mounted shooting, sliding to a stop, working cattle, or making a fast rollback, your horse needs the freedom to move.

Performance horses are asked to accelerate, turn, stop, bend, reach, collect, and change direction—sometimes in a fraction of a second. A saddle shouldn’t restrict the movement that makes those maneuvers possible.

TW Saddlery saddles combine shorter bars, compact skirts, broad weight distribution, and our patented 3-D Adjustable Fit System to give performance horses the room they need to move naturally underneath the saddle.

When Every Second Counts, Movement Matters

In speed events, forward motion starts with the horse’s ability to use its entire body.

As a horse accelerates, the forelimbs need room to reach while the hindquarters generate the power that drives the horse forward. The back, shoulders, and hindquarters all work together to produce an efficient, ground-covering stride.

The less the saddle interferes with that natural movement, the more freely the horse can use its stride.

For barrel racers and mounted shooters, that freedom becomes especially important when fractions of a second can separate one run from another.

A horse that can comfortably reach through the shoulder can use its natural range of motion rather than having to compensate for restriction from the saddle.

Short Skirts for Fast Turns

Speed isn’t only about running in a straight line.

Barrel racing, mounted shooting, cutting, reining, and ranch versatility all require the horse to rapidly change direction while remaining balanced underneath the rider.

The horse may need to:

    • Drive hard from the hindquarters
    • Bend through a tight turn
    • Reach through the shoulder
    • Shift weight back
    • Stop and accelerate again
    • Roll back and change direction
  • Move laterally
  • Rebalance at speed

A long, bulky saddle isn’t necessary to accomplish those movements.

TW Saddlery’s shorter bars and compact skirt designs help minimize unnecessary saddle length and bulk, allowing the horse to bend and move underneath the rider without an oversized skirt extending across the back.

Freedom Through the Shoulder

The shoulder is one of the most important areas to consider when fitting a performance horse.

When the horse reaches forward, the scapula moves underneath the muscles at the front of the saddle. If the saddle fit interferes with that movement, the horse may not be able to use the same natural range of motion through the shoulder.

Our patented 3-D Adjustable Fit System allows the saddle fit to be adjusted for:

Width — Arch/Rock — Angle

Rather than forcing every horse into one fixed tree shape, the saddle can be adjusted to the individual horse—including independently from one side to the other.

The goal is simple: fit the saddle to the horse so the horse can do its job.

Built for More Than Just Speed

Western performance demands different types of movement depending on the event, but they all have something in common: the horse needs to be able to move freely underneath the saddle.

Barrel Racing

Acceleration, tight turns, powerful drive from behind, and fast transitions between collection and extension make freedom of movement especially important for the barrel horse.

A compact saddle helps minimize unnecessary bulk while allowing the horse to bend around the barrel, reach through the shoulder, and accelerate out of the turn.

Mounted Shooting

Mounted shooting combines speed with rapid changes of direction and rider movement.

The horse must accelerate, rate, turn, and stay balanced while the rider needs a secure seat and freedom to use the upper body.

Reining horse and rider competing in a TW Saddlery western performance saddle

Reining

Reining horses need an exceptional range of movement for sliding stops, spins, rollbacks, circles, lead changes, and transitions between speed and collection.

Freedom through the shoulders and back helps the horse lift, engage the hindquarters, bend, and perform athletic maneuvers without unnecessary restriction.

Cutting horse and rider working cattle in a TW Saddlery western performance saddle

Cutting

A cutting horse may change direction almost instantaneously.

Quick stops, explosive acceleration, deep turns, lateral movement, and rapid weight shifts require the horse to stay agile, balanced, and free to move underneath the rider.

Ranch versatility horse and rider competing in a TW Saddlery Ranch Versatility saddle

Ranch Versatility

Ranch versatility asks one horse to do a little bit of everything—from transitions and lead changes to stops, turns, cattle work, and obstacles.

The horse needs a saddle that provides stability for the rider while allowing the freedom to perform a wide variety of movements.

Performance Starts With Freedom of Movement

Whether the job is running a barrel pattern, tracking cattle, spinning, sliding, or racing through a mounted shooting course, the horse needs room to use its shoulders, back, and hindquarters naturally. TW Saddlery’s shorter bars, compact skirts, and adjustable fit are designed to minimize unnecessary restriction and let the horse move underneath the saddle.

The Right Fit Makes Freedom Possible

No two performance horses are built exactly alike. Shoulder angle, back shape, topline, muscling, asymmetry, and conditioning can all affect how a saddle fits—and those factors can change throughout a horse’s competitive career.

TW Saddlery’s patented 3-D Adjustable Fit System allows the saddle to adapt with the horse, helping maintain the freedom of movement a performance horse needs as conditioning and musculature change.

Our patented fit system allows these three dimensions to be adjusted to the individual horse, including independently from one side to the other.

Don’t Let the Saddle Be the Limiting Factor

Performance horses are athletes.

We ask them to run faster, stop harder, turn tighter, change direction quicker, and respond to increasingly subtle cues from the rider.

The saddle sitting between horse and rider should help make that communication possible—not create another obstacle for the horse to overcome.

With shorter bars, compact skirts, adjustable fit, and designs created around freedom of movement, TW Saddlery gives riders a saddle built for the athletic demands of western performance.

Because when your horse has the freedom to use its body naturally, you give your horse the opportunity to perform at its best.

Which Performance Saddle Is Right for You?

From running barrels and mounted shooting to reining, cutting, and ranch versatility, the right saddle depends on what you and your horse are being asked to do. We can help you determine which TW Saddlery model is the best place to start.
